Choosing the right glasses at eyeglasses123 is easy, but selecting the right lenses for your eyes and your lifestyle is slightly harder. Eyeglasses 123 offer 4 types of lenses you pick from to match your lifestyle.
CR39 is a plastic lens solution that is affordable and durable – so durable that it’s original application was for Bomber planes in World War 2. As a matter of fact, CR39 has the highest scratch resistance of any non-coated optical glass and at the same time weighs half as much. However, those who require stronger prescriptions may find that them too heavy and should try higher index lenses that are specifically designed for their eyes. However, even though CR39 is a very strong plastic, it is still prone to shattering so those who play sports or have active lifestyles should try a polycarbonate lens. While CR39 lenses have an inherent resistance to scratches, it is very much recommended to get them with a scratch resistant coating.
Polycarbonate lenses were originally developed as the material for an astronaut’s helmet. Polycarbonate lenses are 10 times more shatter resistant than glass or CR39 lenses, making them ideal for those who are active and require protection for their eyes. In addition, polycarbonate offers natural UV protection of 99% meaning that your eyes will be protected from the sun without the need for any tinting. Polycarbonate lenses are ideal for active people or children due to their durability. However, polycarbonate lenses are prone to scratching so it is important get a scratch resistant coating.
TrivexT is a proprietary new lens that shares many similarities with polycarbonate. Like polycarbonate, TrivexT has natural UV protection and is also shatterproof. However TrivexT offers superior optics in comparison to polycarbonate and is the recommended choice for those who are willing to pay for increased lens clarity. Unfortunately, those with strong prescriptions concerned with the thickness of the lens should seek higher index lenses that are specifically designed for their eyes. Similar to polycarbonate, it is highly recommended to get a scratch resistant coating on these lenses.
High index lenses are made from polyurethane and are specifically designed for those who require stronger prescriptions. Polyurethane lenses are slightly weaker than polycarbonate and TrivexT lenses, but will generally be strong enough for most users. The main feature of polyurethane lenses is that they can be made very thin for those with strong prescriptions. The downside is that they will be heavier than polycarbonate and TrivexT lenses and have less optical quality compared to CR39 or TrivexT. Like all lenses, it is recommended to get a scratch resistant coating in order to protect your investment.
