What are transition lenses?

Transition lenses, a lens with photochromic properties, automatically darken when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light.

How do they work?

A photochromic lens achieves its properties through embedding microcrystalline silver halides (silver chloride), or molecules in a glass substrate, which produces a reversible darkening affect when exposed to UV radiation.  (Thank you, Wikipedia)

In simpler terms, the lenses will darken gradually when exposed to sunlight, becoming gradually darker depending on how bright it is outside. This allows the correct amount of light into the eye to see well, while greatly reducing glare.

What happens if I walk into a bright room indoors?

The darkening effect only takes place when exposed to UV light, which is produced exclusively by the sun. Artificial light does not produce this type of radiation.

What if I am driving?

Windows block most of the UV light, so while you are driving your lenses will not darken much, if at all.

What are the benefits of transition lenses?

If you don’t want to have the worry or hassle of multiple prescription glasses for indoors and outdoors, transition lenses are a good option for you. Unlike sunglasses, transition lenses darken only to the degree required to allow enough light to reach your eye to see well, which is ideal for reducing glare on cloudy days.

Do transition lenses protect your eyes as well as sunglasses?

When choosing glasses there are many things to consider. Face shape, complexion, lifestyle and personal preferences are all important factors, but one thing many people overlook is the type of prescription that they have.

If you are long sighted (you have greater difficulty seeing objects up close, but can focus long distances) the lenses of your glasses can act like the magnifying glass (think Sherlock Holmes), making your eyes appear much larger, depending on prescription strength.

Here are 5 easy ways to tell that your child may need glasses:

1. Squinting

If you notice your child squinting during activities such as reading or playing catch his vision may require attention. Squinting causes a “pinhole” effect, which reduces the size of the image on the retina, temporarily reducing blurriness.

2. Tilted Head

If your child often tilts his head while watching television or reading this could be a sign of a muscle imbalance in the eyes, causing double vision when he looks directly at an object.

3. Holding books too close to his face

This one also goes for sitting too close to the TV, and is a sign that your child may be nearsighted. This means that your child can see well up-close, but has an issue with distances.

4. Closing one eye during activities

When vision problems occur, often one eye will be stronger than the other. If your child often closes one eye, it is probably the weaker one which needs a break, and left untreated will continue to worsen with time.

5. Frequent headaches

If your child is suffering from a vision problem he may try to overcompensate while trying to read the blackboard at school, while on the computer, watching television or reading. If your child complains of a headache ask where it hurts; most often headaches due to eyestrain are in the frontal lobe. Also watch out behavioral changes, increased aggression or uncharacteristic tiredness as many children can’t identify when they have a headache.

If you are unsure, take your child to see an optometrist. School vision assessments, while helpful, are in no way definitive and all vision concerns should be addressed by a professional.
