Ordering Glasses

What information will I need to order glasses from your site?

First thing you will need when getting ready to order glasses on-line is your prescription from your eye doctor. Second, you will need a PD measurement.
Third, decide what type of lenses you need?

Single Vision for Distance Lenses; (driving, TV, movies etc.)
Single Vision Reading lenses; (books, newspaper, computer)
Bifocal Lenses: Bifocals with a line 28mm segment
Progressive Lenses; No-line invisible lenses, good for distance vision, reading vision and intermediate vision (computers)

Important note* Reading glasses are only good for viewing up close, they will distort vision in the distance and need to be removed as soon as you are done reading.
Finally, you will need to decide on your frames.

Frames

Can I have lenses made in my own frames!

What are Progressive Lenses?

Progressive lenses, sometimes called "no-line bifocals", are a type of eyeglass lens used to provide visual correction for a common condition called presbyopia. Varilux progressive lenses enable you to see near, far and everything in between.

Progressive lenses work best when worn close to your face, adjusted properly so that they do not slide down your nose and are worn most of the day.
Fact: If you intend on wearing your new eyeglasses most waking hours in the day, then you will most likely be a successful progressive lens wearer.

Progressive lenses do not work well if worn like reading glasses.

Fact: People that wear progressive lenses only to read and take them off when they are done reading, usually are not as happy with their progressive glasses.

What are A/R Lenses?

A/R Coating is short for Anti-Reflective Coating. A/R Coating removes reflections from the lens surface. Reflections make it harder to see, and reduce the amount of light entering your eye.

A/R Coating gives you better vision by removing reflections on the lenses and at the same time allowing more light to reach your eye.
Perfect for improving night vision while driving, and annoying reflections from computer screens and television.

You will see better and closer to your nature vision.

[Top of Page]

Why do you offer 3 types of A/R coating?

In order to explain this we need to give you a little history lesson on A/R.

When A/R Coating first came out there were some problems with performance. A/R lenses only worked well when they were clean. Unfortunately, A/R lenses were very hard to keep clean. In addition, A/R lenses use to scratch, peel and chip. Many people tried A/R lenses and had experienced these problems. .

The good news is, manufacturers realized they needed to work on the performance of this product and spent millions of dollars trying to perfect A/R coating.

Needless to say, A/R Coating has gone through a lot of changes.
Through technology all of these issues previously mentioned are now a thing of the past.

Today the most technologically advanced Anti Reflective lenses are Crizal Avance. These lenses eliminate reflective glare and allow more light to reach your eye. You will experience more clear, crisp and natural vision. They are guaranteed not to scratch for a full 2 years; they are also the most smudge resistant lenses available. They stay smudge free and scratch free longer than any other A/R lenses on the market.

Crizal Alize' is a little older technology. They also, remove reflections and annoying glare. They have a 1 year warranty against scratching and are more smudge resistant and stay cleaner than our standard A/R lenses.

Standard A/R is a good lens; they remove reflections and annoying glare and allow more light to reach your eye. They will improve vision in reflective situations like night driving and office situations. Not as smudge resistant and do not come with a scratch resistant warranty.

I don't want thick lenses, what is the best way to avoid this?

When ordering lenses first you need to ask yourself a few questions Do you have a low power or a high power prescription?

What is more important to you? Thin & lighter weight lenses or less expensive lenses?

A low power is a Sphere or Cylinder up to 2.00 diopters. Anything over a 2.00 diopter you might want to consider ordering a lighter thinner material like Polycarbonate Lenses. These lenses are 25% lighter and thinner than CR-39 plastic.

If your prescription is higher than 4.00 diopters you should consider a 1.67 high index material or higher. This material is at least 35% thinner and lighter than CR-39 Plastic.

After you addressed your prescriptions requirements, you need to decide how important the lenses thickness is to you. We are talking about cosmetics.

Will you feel comfortable with lenses that aren't thin or standard thickness?

You can reduce the appearance of the lens thickness by selecting a frame with a full rim, preferably a smaller plastic frame. This will help to hide the thickness of the lenses better than a full metal frame, semi-rimless or 3 piece rimless frame.

Finally, if you are involved in sports or any dangerous work, you should definitely consider Polycarbonate Lenses. These lenses are extremely impact resistant and won’t break like a CR-39 plastic lens can upon impact.

Can I have lenses made in my own frames?

At the present time we are not offering this service.
We are exploring it and will let you know when we will be offering it.

Are there different types of glare?

There are four types of glare that progressively affect one's ability to see clearly. These are:

  • Distracting glare, where light reflects from the eyeglass lens surface or from within the lens, causing distraction, eye fatigue and squinting.

  • Discomforting glare, where light reaches an intensity level at which the eye is unable to adapt naturally, resulting in true eye discomfort and reduced ability to see clearly.

  • Disabling glare, where light intensity becomes extreme. The eye's ability to adapt is exceeded, the ability to discern detail is significantly compromised. Eye discomfort becomes significant, and vision can be impaired.

  • Blinding glare, the most extreme form of glare, is when bright light reflects off of smooth, shiny surfaces, like water, sand or snow, acting like a mirror to redirect blinding light directly to the eye. The result is severe discomfort and debilitating impact on one's ability to see even for a period of time after the glare is removed, due to the latent effects of such extreme glare.

[Top of Page]

Who can benefit from 1.67 Thin & Lite lenses?

  • Patients with higher prescriptions who want to minimize lens thickness
  • Farsighted (plus) prescriptions to reduce magnification and improve your eyes appearance
  • Patients who want rimless or semi-rimless frame styles
  • Anyone who wants a thinner, flatter lens for better vision and appearance.

What is a PD Measurement?

PD is a measurement of the distance between your eyes in millimeters.

We recommend you ask your eye doctor for your PD measurement before you leave their office. If that is not an option, then you can easily measure your own PD by having a friend stand about one foot away from you and measure the distance between your eyes with a ruler. The distance from the center of right pupil to the center of the left pupil is your distance PD.

PD measurements are more important for higher prescriptions (3.00 and higher).
A normal PD measurement for children is about 46mm to 59mm. A small adult PD falls between 49mm and 62mm. Most distance PD's average around 63mm.

[Top of Page]

How do I get my PD measurement?

The easiest way to get a PD measurement is before you leave the Optician/doctors office you ask him to write the PD measurement down with your prescription.

If you'd rather not, then we can make your glasses using an average PD measurement based on a survey of 4,000 people.

You can also ask a friend to stand about 1 foot away from you and have them measure the distance between your pupils with a millimeter ruler. It should be somewhere around 59 to 74 millimeters with most people falling in the middle around 63mm.

Another way to obtain a PD measurement is, you can stand in front of a mirror about 1 foot away. Have a sharpie pen ready. Close your left eye and dot the mirror where your right eye is. Without moving close your right eye and dot the mirror where your left eye is. Now take a millimeter ruler and measure the distance from one dot to the other dot. That is your PD.

[Top of Page]

Why do you have 2 boxes for my PD? I only have 1 number written down.

A PD is the distance between your pupils of your eyes. When we are working with Progressive lenses we usually want a Mono PD.

In other words, the distance measurement for each eye separately. So, if you have a PD of 60mm, your Mono PD should be something like 31mm right and 29mm left. Not everybody’s distance between their eyes is exact. It can very well be 30 right, 30 left for a 60mm PD, but not always.

If you have 1 number written down, you can split the number in half and that will work for most progressive lenses prescriptions.

[Top of Page]

Can I use my contact lenses prescription?

No, they are not the same in most cases.

[Top of Page]

I'm not comfortable with my new glasses. I see well, but I can't wear them for very long. What do I do?

We recommend that you visit your local optician and discuss the problems you are having. Many times with new prescriptions, the vision is good, but the comfort is not as good.

We suggest you first get your new eyeglasses adjusted by a professional in the field. We strongly recommend that you have them closely look at the present adjustment on your old eyeglasses and try to have them match the adjustment to your new pair.

It is very important to look at the distance of the bottom of the frames to your cheeks and try to keep the distance the same. In addition, look at the front of the frame and see if they have a bow effect, or if they are fairly flat. Have your optician try to match the curvature as well.

These two simple adjustments usually take care of 90% of problems with comfort with new prescription glasses.

Eyeglasses Insurance

Do you work with insurance companies?

At the present time we are not aware of any insurance companies working with On-Line Eyeglasses stores.

You will receive an itemized bill for your new glasses, which you should be able to submit to your insurance company for direct reimbursement.

You can also use your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to purchase glasses on our site. If you have a FSA credit card you can use that, or if you have to submit a bill to get reimburse you can do that as well.

[Top of Page]

How can you charge so little for glasses?

Because we cut out the middlemen, and don't need to pay for expensive retail stores and eye testing equipment, we don't need to pass on the cost to you.
